Welcome to the Doylestown Inn, a charming seventeen room boutique hotel located in the heart of historic Doylestown, Pennsylvania. In addition to the beautifully appointed rooms, the inn features the Hattery Stove & Still, a cutting-edge restaurant and bar with an antique-industrial design that offers a modern-American tavern menu.
Originally constructed as three separate buildings in 1871, two of the dwellings were connected in 1902 to form a quaint hotel that thrived during the early twentieth century. The third building was incorporated during an expansion in 1937. Operating as a speakeasy during prohibition, the great talents of music, literature stage, screen, law, and business gathered here to enjoy the fun atmosphere and fine food.
A tavern opened with the inn in 1902, the “Jug in the Wall” Bar, and operated until the late 1990’s. All the jazz greats would drive from New York City and play late into the night. It was the place to be! Celebrities such as inventor Henry Ford and writers Pearl S. Buck, James Michener, and Dorothy Parker were all guests at the inn. Oscar Hammerstein II wrote many of his songs at the inn and—legend has it—he composed the lyrics for the Broadway musical South Pacific during one of his many stays.
Throughout its lifespan, this landmark property has housed a multitude of businesses including a hattery, cigar shop, shoe store, and grocery store. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the owners have strived to pay homage to its diverse history, resurrecting the inn and restaurant like a page from the past.
In March 2013, longtime locals partnered up and re-opened the inn, converting 4,500 square feet, spanning over three floors, of the property into what it is today—a welcoming place for visitors from around the world and a home-away-from-home for locals. Their mission was, “to celebrate everything that this property has been throughout its life. It was important to all of us to build a destination for Doylestown that commemorates the town’s rich history.”
With the help of Rost Artisan Builders and a wealth of vintage treasures, the design honors the buildings varied past. The lobby level bar features a base constructed from antique wooden beverage boxes, and the stainless-steel bar top contains a medley of rivets, reminiscent of a vintage aircraft wing. A lower-level bar utilizes a 1936 Oldsmobile complete with suicide doors and a tailgate from an old Chevy pickup truck.
In addition to the inventive bar designs, the restaurant and inn lobby is adorned with
reclaimed pumpkin pine floorboards, an antique still, a collection of burlap coffee bags, a
wall of antique suitcases, a 1920’s ice chest, a vintage phonebooth, cobbler equipment, an
array of eye-catching chandeliers, and a speakeasy door complete with a sliding peep
hole. The cigar box ceiling in the lobby and pendant hat lights over the bar add artistic
flair. The custom-made tree was constructed from the old floors of the lower level and
spans two stories.
Owners of the Doylestown Inn, Todd and Samantha McCarty, have fused historical
charm with modern amenities that provides luxury accommdations and easy access to
specialty shops, galleries, and museums. The second-floor banquet room offers private
events and overlooks quaint State Street with floor to ceiling windows.
